In 1999, the state of Maine administered its first statewide test aligned to content standards (Maine Learning Results) in writing, reading and math. The pass rate in writing was approximately triple the pass rate in reading and math. Why? Maine had been training teachers statewide in performance assessment for writing for 15 years.

This was the genesis of Learning Effects. Learning Effects developed technology to assist in both administering and scoring of performance assessments. It trains teachers to create reliable data from assessing student work, using rubrics, and then uses those data to drive professional development targeted to the areas of greatest need. The result, as in Maine, is a richer learning experience for teachers and improved student achievement on state tests.
